CTO Craft Con - Schedule

Andy Skipper - Founder and Chief Coach at CTO Craft

    16:00 - 16:10 GMT

    Welcome!

Andy Skipper - Founder and Chief Coach at CTO Craft

Kelly Waters - Founder and Chief Strategy Officer at 101 Ways

    16:10 - 16:40 GMT

    The Agile Time Warp

Kelly Waters - Founder and Chief Strategy Officer at 101 Ways
Agile frameworks now look more like their predecessors in 1995 than ever before. And it's not pretty. If we are serious about achieving greater agility, I believe we need to get back to basics - back to the essence of agility - and look beyond Agile frameworks. Because 'doing Agile' won't solve your problems; it's solving your problems that will make you more agile. So what is the essence of agility? What are some of the most important aspects of delivery beyond the Agile frameworks, regardless of whether your organisation is small, large or scaling up?

    Amanda Kabak - CTO/Principal Architect

    17:00 - 17:20 GMT

    Planning for Agility

    Amanda Kabak - CTO/Principal Architect
How can we, as technical leaders, partner with our businesses and enable true transparency, efficiency, and agility when delivering software solutions? The answer is clear but not necessarily obvious: by planning. Before you scream “waterfall” and run off, this talk presents an effective planning methodology that enables answering hard questions from the business and pivoting when you need to. With this type of planning, you’ll no longer have to give SWAG responses to stakeholders while keeping your fingers crossed behind your back.

Zoe Cunningham - Director at Softwire
Why are you frustrated? Unreasonable demands from the CEO? Conflict with other executives? Is your team just not delivering the way you expect? If you’re frustrated, you might be to blame if you've been avoiding having difficult conversations. The good news is there are proven methods for improving your conversational skills. The bad news is that it requires difficult emotional work. In this fireside chat we’lll discuss how you can gain the skills of Agile Conversations and transform your culture.

A successful platform is normally measured by adoption and usage — important metrics to track to ensure you’re serving your internal customers. From a business perspective, though, you also need to show that your platform delivers a worthy return on the investment your organization makes to build, run, maintain and evolve it. Join CircleCI's VP, Platform, Mike Stahnke in this talk as he walks attendees through four key metrics to determine platform ROI and ways to put them into practice.

As a team working together, how do you know if you're winning or losing? Your team needs to keep score! But what do you track? The conversation will examine 'before' and 'after' performance measures to evaluate the impact of that decision on both the team and the product. The discussion will focus on how continuous improvement for a product relates to continuous improvement for developers, and what that means for time-poor teams who can't be spared for training.

We all enjoy writing tests for our web applications, right? Wrong. Many developers consider writing the full end-to-end tests is a chore, and can be delayed until the deadline pressure makes this problem 'go away'. Yet, in this pandemic world, having a working website is a must for any online business in order for the company to survive. In this chat, we will discuss testing, its challenges, and what every business can do to ensure the users are happy with the quality.

    17:40 - 18:00 GMT

Metrics Alone Don't Improve Dev Teams: Strategies for Implementing Continuous Improvement

Ori Keren - CEO at LinearB
Tracking engineering metrics is viewed as table stakes by most dev leaders, but not all metrics are created equal and dashboards don't help dev teams improve. Progressive software development organisations are moving beyond top-down metrics to focus on continuous improvement using Software Delivery Intelligence. In this session you’ll learn: Which metrics create a culture of teamwork and active improvement; how to operationalize data into your day-to-day rituals and ceremonies; how to create a bottom-up movement of improvement among your developers and how to automate continuous improvement using LinearB Software Delivery Intelligence.

Charity Majors - CTO of Honeycomb

    18:45 - 19:00 GMT

CI/CD: It’s a Failed Run Unless Your Code Is In Production

Charity Majors - CTO of Honeycomb
We have lost the plot and forgotten the mission of the CI/CD revolution. It doesn’t just mean lots of tests. It means get your code into your production within minutes after you merge it. No gates, no checklists, no pointy-clicky, human obstacles to progress. (What would you do with 4x the engineering cycles? If your deploy lead time is days, fix CI/CD and find out.) The failure to complete the most revolutionary mission of our lifetimes is a generational failure of the professional technical manager class. Let’s fix it, and start earning our salaries again.

    You Want It WHEN?

    Douglas Squirrel - Consulting CTO
They're asking your agile team to do the seemingly impossible: complete a one-month integration next week, double team capacity by next quarter, squeeze in one more enormous feature this sprint. But these apparently unreasonable demands actually are an opportunity for you to build trust, learn about customer needs and priorities, and improve your relationships with colleagues and stakeholders. During this talk, Douglas will describe powerful techniques for turning pressure into profit and commands into jointly-designed results.
